It's been almost 8 months and we have driven the Fit around 8500km (which means just over 5000 miles) and it's a good chance to give an update. The car has performed almost perfectly to date - the maintenance kinder system has just indicated that the first service is due, but there's nothing that needs to be fixed. The car drives well and other than when the engine is cold it feels responsive and powerful enough, and it doesn't feel strained at autoroute speeds (the ones people drive at in Quebec, not the posted limits). The ratio of usable space to length is probably better than any other car on sale in North America. We have had no problem fitting two full-size toddler car seats in the back and while the depth of the cargo area isn't great the fact that it's a hatchback means we can use the full height of the car so we have been able to carry more than the Focus would have done. The handling continues to impress me - the car feels extremely sure-footed in manoeuvres and you don't feel exposed by being in a small car.
This latter feeling has been strnegthend by driving some of the cars we have rented over the last six months - we stick to the small is good theory when we rent, but unfortunately not all that is small is good (see Chevy Aveo, Toyota Yaris and Chevy Cobalt/Pontiac G5 for details). There are still many small cars that feel poorly put together and that lack good road feel while driving which makes you feel legitimately nervous about being in a small car. The Fit feels well constructed and drives so well that you feel like you are better off being in this size of car. Go out and buy one today.
